Sligo Lend a Hand offers three free services to vulnerable and older people living in Sligo.

Our coordinator receives calls and organises volunteers to carry out the work following service protocol for the following:

Lend a Hand service is provided free of charge by a pool of voluntary handypersons and helpers. The service includes minor repairs and small jobs inside and outside of the house. The emphasis is that no job is too small. The more common services required are :

• Install locks, door chains, and bolts
• Small paint jobs
• Minor repairs
• Installing curtain rails
• Cleaning and tidying
• Set heating timers
• Light gardening (max 3 visits)
• And more…….

The Lend a Hand service will not cover any job which takes more than one and a half hours to complete. Work which is the responsibility of a landlord, other housing body or service provider. Work which displaces an existing service.

To avail of the Sligo Lend a Hand Service call a dedicated phone line 087 177 6386 from 11 am – 3 pm, Monday-Friday. The coordinator will organize a team of volunteers to make a home visit. The repairs will be carried out in pairs, at a time agreed with the service user and the Sligo Lend a Hand coordinator.

The Trades Referral Register is an option that vulnerable and older people can avail of when they have work to be completed that is beyond the scope of our services. Sligo Lend a Hand has compiled a register of reliable honest trades people who have been recommended to us. If a large job is required, the vulnerable and older person can contact the coordinator who will arrange for two trades people from the register to quote the job. This provides the service user with the confidence that they are employing a professional whose work is of a high standard at a reasonable rate.

The Quote-Check Service is provided by Lend a Hand when a vulnerable or older person receives a quote for work to be carried out in their home from an independent tradesperson. If they are not sure about the price quoted the vulnerable / older person can contact the Sligo Lend a Hand coordinator. The coordinator will send an experienced person and a volunteer to visit the home and assess the job, giving an informed opinion as to whether or not the price is reasonable. The assurance provides the service user with peace of mind.
